The results of the third national forest inventory in Germany in 2012 reveal a rise in the percentage of deciduous trees whereas the percentage of spruce has declined compared to the last inventory in 2002. The aim of this project was to determine to which extend the usage of “other deciduous trees with short life expectancy” like poplar, birch, willow or alder is eligible for the production of unoriented strand boards (USB) as a new developed wood based panel. The wood species were also chemical analysed and determined concerning the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC).The first part of the publication deals with both the chemical properties and the potential of VOC emissions compared to pinewood as reference. Within the second part of the publication, the physical-technological properties of the manufactured wood-based panels will be discussed.

It is often reported, that the growing area of the tree has an influence on the timber quality. But this traditional knowledge is not always confirmed of sawmill owners. With the here presented work the influence of the growing area on the visual, physical and mechanical properties of mountain spruce wood should be detected. Therefore a total of 476 timber beams from two mountain valleys at North- and South Tyrol (Austria and Italy) were sorted by visual and machine strength-grading methods. Afterwards the physical and mechanical properties are determined by bending tests according to ÖNORM EN 408 (2012). The obtained results are compared with results of other investigations about spruce wood from deeper located growing areas. Furthermore it is also taken into account, the influences of the past cultivations at the growing area onto the wood properties. The article is divided into two parts. In part 1 (Maderebner et al., 2016), in addition to the chosen methods and materials, also the results of the visual grading were presented. In part 2, the findings of the experimental studies are clearly represented and discussed in an summary analysis.

The morphological characteristic of fibre pulp for the manufacture of MDF is an important quality criterion. The characterization of fibre pulp for process control is not yet fully solved until now. The speed of analysis, the heterogenetic composition of particles (dust, single fibres, fibre bundles), fibre agglomeration, and a differentiated morphologic data analysis are still problematic. Fibre pulps were produced out of different wood species (Scots pine, beech, oak) and under varying pulping conditions (intensity of plasticization). These pulps were analysed with the in part 1 displayed special method of fibre characterization and classification. The results are discussed.

The article describes the use of high-power ultrasonic for narrow surface coating of board components in the field of furniture manufacturing and interior construction. Up to now there is no process available to thermal activate any narrow surface coating material directly in the joining space. Technische Universität Dresden started a research project to explore the high potential of ultrasonic technology for this application. Within the project a working demonstrator tool has been developed and integrated into an existing industrial machine. The surrounding functionality of the machine has been sustained. Using the modified machine it was possible to produce flawless products under industrial conditions. The strength of the manufactured joint can compete with the ones produced using standard joining technologies.

In the present study typical, commercially available MDF coated with different painting systems for kitchen furniture are compared regarding their emission behaviour and surface properties: water-based paint, solvent-based paint, and powder coated surfaces. It was found that the powder coated panels lead to high-grade products in terms of scratch resistance, adhesive strength and surface resistance to wet heat and especially in terms of VOC emission. Water-based paints demonstrated lower VOC emission than the solvent-based coatings and regarding the surface properties they showed with one exception comparable characteristic values.

To optimize the power balance of seat constructions preferred by constructive methods without active systems a deeper understanding of heat transport processes in upholsteries is required. Five application sceneries with defined ambient temperatures and mechanical seat loads determined the conditions under which commercially available cushioning materials were tested for their essential thermal properties. The determined material properties of thermal conductivity λ, the specific heat capacity c, the density ρ and their dependence on the material temperature and the compression level were used as parameters in extensive FEM simulations. The work exemplarily presents the results of a simulation model for heating of the uncompressed seat cushion under simulated sunlight and identifies ways to significantly reduce the reached maximum surface temperature.

The overall impression of a surface is an important criterion for a consumer and his decision to buy a glossy surface. Therefore, the development of a new method, which measures the overall impression of a glossy surface, was the main goal at the Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH. This new method, which is described here, includes the measurement of the reflexion of a light beam on a glossy surface and transformation of the reflexion into graphical information. Due to the deformation of the original light beam on the samples surface, the new parameter, the so called surface impression, can be calculated. With this new method it is possible to evaluate the surface impression in total, which also includes its structure. The high correlation with the carpenter view (R² = 0,95) demonstrates the agreement of this new objective method with the currently used subjective individual impression.

Trees are used by people in many ways. In Hungary, the uniquely high diversity of tree species opens up rich possibilities of use of existing forest areas. Forest products harvested in industrialized forests consist mainly of firewood. Part of burnt wood, however, could also serve as the raw material of the Hungarian wood panel industry and for the production of valuable products. Part of dendromass that remains after logging in the forest, could still be found in heating applications, and in this way replace the more valuable wood. The longest possible recycling of the timber should be given special importance. The timber will be an important and varied usable building material and basic material.
