While electrostatic powder coating is well established for coating woodbased materials in furniture construction, adequate use of this technology for exterior applications is not yet state of the art. Not only the hygroscopic properties of wood-based materials, but also the low weather resistance of powder coatings optimized for use on wood-based materials hinder the use of wood-based materials in outdoor applications. Against this background, the article shows how the different challenges in electrostatic powder coating of poorly conductive and temperature-sensitive substrates can be met. The general conditions under which the process-safe use of electrostatic

powder coating can also be successful for exterior products based on wood materials in the future are also considered.

The subject of the project was the development of an integral suspension system for upholstered furniture made of plastic, which is produced using the fused filament fabrication process. Up to now, suspension systems for upholstery are designed in differential construction, consisting of a seat frame, sub-suspension system and spring core. The generative manufacturing process enables a reduction of process steps and new types of seating furniture construction. When selecting suitable materials, availability was evaluated in addition to mechanical properties. Two models of an integral suspension system, with different compositions of the structural elements,

were designed, manufactured and tested. The relevant parameters for adjusting the suspension behaviour were classified in “pattern factors”. With the results, the project makes a significant contribution to the use of additive manufacturing processes for technically demanding applications and to the development of new suspension concepts. It supports the establishment of new technologies and automation in the upholstered furniture industry.

The aim of the investigations was to develop a robot application for the precise joining of fasteners by means of adhesive during the joining process in the cabinet press. In cooperation with the company Hüttenhölscher, a changing tool for robots was developed for the inductive bonding of fasteners. The fasteners are joined with repeatable accuracy and cleanliness by using fasteners precoated with hotmelt adhesive. As part of the project work, the technology for providing, heating and processing the fasteners was developed and manufactured. The robot used for this purpose enabled, in addition to the repeatable processing of the fasteners. Homogeneous heating of the adhesive with minimum heating time was defined as the target value in the process. A modified mounting plate from Blum company was used as a fastener. The strength was verified on pot hinges according to DIN EN 15570 (2008). The state of the art and the development of the robotic cell has been described in Part 1 of the publication. The second part of the paper presents the results of the tests on the heating behaviour and the suitability of the process

The oblique cutting is often used for veneer production, planing and milling operations. It has a lot of advantages both from operational and machining point of view. In the first part of these experiments the goal was to measure the oblique cutting force and power requirements using four different wood species with fixed cutting angle and cutting thickness. The results support the relationships based on practical observations. Independently of wood species the optimum of cutting power is at 25-35° of oblique angle. The cutting force values have been calculated based on the measured power requirements. The cutting force strongly depends on the wood material, the operation parameters and the oblique angle, and the tool cutting angle as well. The measurements results have been plotted graphically, the power curves have been used to calculate the specific force and its decrease compared to orthogonal cutting is represented in dimensionless form in order to generalize the obtained results.
